Former Barcelona star Ivan Rakitic has retired from international football. Rakitic has been a key player on the Croatian national team for the last 12 years.
The Croatian midfield alliance between Modric and Rakitic came as a shock to many European giants. Rakitic was also instrumental in helping Croatia reach the World Cup final, shocking everyone at the last World Cup.
Rakitic made his Croatian debut in 2007. Rakitic has scored 16 goals in 106 appearances for the national team.
Rakitic is currently leaving Barcelona to play for Sevilla. The 32-year-old has announced his retirement to focus on fitness and to play more for the club.
“Saying goodbye to the Croatian national team is the most difficult decision in my career, but I felt that this was the moment when I had to break away and make that decision,” said Rakitic in a social media post from the national side.
“I enjoyed every game I played for my homeland, and unforgettable moments from the World Cup will remain among my favourites".
